Surprisingly Little O VI Emission Arises in the Local
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper reports the first study of the O VI resonance line emission (λλ 1032, 1038) originating in the Local Bubble (or Local Hot Bubble) surrounding the solar neighborhood. In spite of the fact that O VI absorption within the Local Bubble has been observed, no resonance line emission was detected during our 230 ksec Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer observation of a " shadowing " filament in the southern Galactic hemisphere. As a result, tight 2 sigma upper limits are set on the intensities in the 1032 and 1038Å emission lines: 500 and 530 photons cm −2 s −1 sr −1 , respectively. These values place strict constraints on simulations. They suggest that the O VI-bearing plasma and the X-ray emissive plasma reside in distinct regions of the Local Bubble and are not mixed in a single plasma, whether in equilibrium with T ∼ 10 6 K or highly overionized with T ∼ 4 to 6 × 10 4 , plasma. With these intensity upper limits, we establish limits on the electron density, thermal pressure, pathlength, and cooling timescale of the O VI-bearing plasma in the Local Bubble. Furthermore, the intensity of O VI resonance line doublet photons originating in the Galactic thick disk and halo is determined (3500 to 4300 photons cm −2 s −1 sr −1), and the electron density, thermal pressure, pathlength, and cooling timescale of its O VI-bearing plasma are calculated. The pressure in the Galactic halo's O VI-bearing plasma (3100 to 3800 K cm −3) agrees with model predictions for the total pressure in the thick disk/lower halo. We also report the results of searches for the emission signatures

FUSE Observations of the Loop I/Local Bubble Interaction Region
We used the FUSE (Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer) satellite to observe O VI emission along two sightlines towards the edge of the interaction zone (IZ) between the Loop I superbubble and the Local Bubble. One sightline was chosen because material in the interaction zone blocks distant X-ray emission, and should thus do the same for non-local O VI emission. We measured an O VI intensity ...

متن کاملX-ray and Uv Spectroscopy of Galactic Diffuse Hot Gas along the Lmc X–3 Sight Line
We present Suzaku spectra of X-ray emission in the fields just off the LMC X–3 sight line. O VII, O VIII, and Ne IX emission lines are clearly detected, suggesting the presence of an optically thin thermal plasma with an average temperature of 2.4 ×106 K. This temperature is significantly higher than that inferred from existing Xray absorption line data obtained with Chandra grating observation...

I summarize Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of interstellar O vi absorption towards 12 early-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), the closest disk galaxy to the Milky Way. LMC O vi is seen towards all 12 stars with properties (average column densities, kinematics) very similar to those of the Milky Way halo, even though O/H in the LMC is lower by a factor o...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 3 FUSE Spectra of the Black Hole Binary LMC
Far-ultraviolet spectra of LMC X-3 were taken covering photometric phases 0.47 to 0.74 in the 1.7-day orbital period of the black-hole binary (phase zero being superior conjunction of the X-ray source). The continuum is faint and flat, but appears to vary significantly during the observations. Concurrent RXT E/ASM observations show the system was in its most luminous X-ray state during the FUSE...
